Parasitic Worm Populations Are Skyrocketing In Some Fish Species Used In Sushi
Parasitic Worm Populations Are Skyrocketing In Some Fish Species Used In Sushi
If you love sushi, we might end up disappointing you, but that is not our intention. Yet, next time you are going out for this delicacy with your friends, make sure you are more mindful.
Namely, according to a report published in Global Change Biology on March 19, the rate of fish infected with the anisakis parasite has increased by 283 times since the 1970s.
Chelsea Wood at the University of Washington in Seattle and her colleagues analyzed the abundance of Anisakis, or herring worm, between 1978 and 2015.
They garnered data on the average number of parasites per fish from 123 studies, which involved 56,778 fish across 215 species.
These parasitic nematodes (worms) and are also known as whale worms and are found in marine life, including fish and mammals. They can grow up to 2 cm, and if consumed, they can lead to vomiting and diarrhea.
The infection is called Anisakiasis, and if it occurs, one develops symptoms such as abdominal pain, a tingling sensation, bloating, nausea, mild fever, blood or mucus in the stool, and allergic reactions.
These parasites are not contagious. So even if a person gets infected, the human-to-human transmission is impossible.
The 1967 analysis found more than 55,000 species of the worm in 215 different species of fish. In the late ‘70s, researchers found less than one worm per 100 fish.
Yet, now, they found more than one worm per individual fish! The primary host of the adult whale worms are whales, and all cetaceans are their ideal home.
Namely, the feces of cetaceans contains anisakis eggs, and when they defecate, these eggs remain in the environment. They hatch in water and become larvae, which are often consumed by crustaceans and mollusks. Krill, as a primary food source for fish and squid, is an important intermediate host.
The larvae encyst on the intestines and other visceral organs of the fish and squid, and once they are eaten by marine mammals, they grow, mate, and then eggs again.
The consumption of raw and uncooked fish and squid contaminated with the parasite makes us its host. Yet, the massive proliferation of these parasites might increase the risk for many of their hosts.
MUST SEE: “Shocking New Resurge Report – What They’ll Never Tell You”
The problems are more serious for intermediate hosts. For instance, the Atlantic Salmon, if infected, develop red vent syndrome.
Wood adds:
“One of the important implications of this study is that now we know there is this massive, rising health risk to marine mammals. It’s not often considered that parasites might be the reason that some marine mammal populations are failing to bounce back. I hope this study encourages people to look at intestinal parasites as a potential cap on the population growth of endangered and threatened marine mammals.”
Therefore, she explains that they “ want to try and minimize the number of worms that people are encountering in their sushi dinner” and adds that “that is going to become more challenging into the future as we get these increasing abundances.”
There are several theories for the dramatic increase in the parasite population in the last four decades. As some shale populations are on the rebound, parasites might have got more hosts throughout the ocean.
This is a good sign, according to Wood:
“These worms might be a signal that things are getting better for ocean ecosystems. My gut feeling is that it’s about recovery to a prehuman baseline. In a pristine ocean, there were tons of marine mammals pooping out lots of Anisakis that infected fish in great abundance.”
However, this theory has yet to be studied.
Another possible explanation is that the parasites’ life cycles have been accelerated due to climate change and the warming up of ocean waters.
Meanwhile, what can you do to protect yourself? Well, cooking your fish will keep you on the safe side. Freezing fillets kills the parasites too, and farmed fish are rarely infected with them.
But sushi and sushimi pose a greater risk. If it comforts you, Wood still eats sushi, “all the time”!
She believes that sushi chefs are even better at spotting these worms in the fish than scientists, and they pick them out if they spot them! Therefore, she believes this you should not stop eating your favorite Japanese dish!

These Convertible Stairs Convert Into a Wheelchair Ramp When Needed
Designer Chan Wen Jie has come up with an ingenious solution to help people in wheelchairs get up and down stairs when there's no wheelchair ramp installed. The unique invention would attach to an existing set of stairs, and with the simple press of a lever, the stairs would instantly flip and turn into a wheelchair ramp. The device would be made up of little pieces of the ramp that sit flat on each step when in stair mode, and flip up at a 45 degree angle and connect to one another to form a ramp when activated.
Although it's just a concept for now, the converting stairs to wheelchair ramp invention could be a welcome piece of technology for those in need trying to access places without an existing wheelchair ramp or a handicap accessible entrance, especially in urban areas.
How it works is, by default it would be in stairs mode, which would blend in with the staircase they're attached to. Then, by stepping onto a lever, it'll activate the stairs and shift them into ramp mode. Once, the user is done using it, you can press the lever back and they'll convert back into stairs. They could probably permanently be in ramp mode if the stairs were wide enough, though for use on more narrow stairs, it would certainly need to be switched back and forth with each use.
Chan goes on to describe his design: "The goal of this design is to help the elderly, those who have walking difficulties, or those who need to move heavy items in a trolley or on a cart to climb stairs more efficiently and conveniently. It aims to minimize falls and injuries."

Make Your Own Natural Tick Deterrent
Make Your Own Natural Tick Deterrent
During the spring and summer, we enjoy our time outdoors, staying up late in our yards, going to the beach, or taking a walk in the park. However, things can never be perfect, it seems!
When it comes to these two seasons, bugs are the biggest problem!
While many turn to commercial repellents to help them get rid of the insects, you should know that they are harmful, rich in dangerous chemicals, and might cause skin irritations, respiratory issues, coughing, upset stomach, and more.
On the other hand, there are completely natural bug sprays that are as effective but do not endanger the health of the entire family.
Essential oils are potent insect repellents, and many of them are especially effective in getting rid of specific pests. For instance, citronella, lemon, catnip, lavender, lemon eucalyptus, peppermint, eucalyptus, basil, clove, thyme, lemongrass, geranium and excellent for mosquitoes, juniper, thyme, oregano, and grapefruit are effective against ticks, and eucalyptus, tea tree oil, lemongrass, cedarwood, citronella, lavender, orange, pine, are powerful flea repellents.
Here is how to make your homemade all-purpose bug spray:
Ingredients:
- 10-12 drops of Citronella
- 10-12 drops of Eucalyptus
- 10 drops of Lavender
- 1-15 oz. bottle of witch hazel
- 10-12 drops of Lemongrass
Directions:
Divide the witch hazel into two small bottles, and add the other oils to them.
Close the bottles with the lid and shake well to mix the oils.
Then, use one of the sprays for outdoor use, and have the other one always with you. It smells great!
Shake before each use.
This natural repellent smells much better than a commercial one, it doesn’t feel sticky on your skin, and it does not harm your health nor the environment.
Give it a try!
Additionally, you can also try the following homemade tick repellent:
Ingredients:
- 1 part tea tree oil
- 2 parts of water
Directions:
Mix the ingredients in a spray bottle, mix well, and spray on shoes, socks, or pant cuffs to repel ticks.
If you have a pet, replace tea tree oil with peppermint, myrrh, cedarwood, marjoram, chamomile, lavender, or clary sage.
Tips:
When using essential oils, always make a patch test before use to check for an allergic reaction.
Avoid spraying on the face and touching the eyes and mouth if you have spray on the hands
Make sure you consult a health practitioner before use in case you are pregnant or nursing.
Be especially careful if you use them on young children. Spray onto their clothes if they are under 2.
Apply as often as you need it.
Store essential oils in dark-colored bottles, in a cool, dark place when not using.

Crocheted Nest Has Kept Hornets Away for Years
Crocheted Nest Has Kept Hornets Away for Years
Tired of spraying wasp killer, woman invents wildlife-friendly alternative
For years, Sandy Davis struggled with spraying hornets’ nests on her patio with toxic pesticides, known to harm bees, birds and other wildlife.
After reading that hornets, and other wasps, are very territorial and will not build nests anywhere near each other, she had an idea.
She crocheted a wasp nest look-alive to trick the hornets into thinking others already lived there. She hung it up 4 years ago and hasn’t had “a single one since.”
Hornet's nests on the outdoor patio were always a problem until 4 years ago when I crocheted and hung my fake one after reading that hornets are territorial. Not a single one since then! ANOTHER PAGE IS SHARING MY POST AND STATING THAT I USED TO SPRAY--NOT TRUE--I HAVE NEVER USED POISONS!!! 😱
UPDATE #2 thank you for all of the private messages, over 3000! 😮 and I am trying to answer them all, so please be patient as I work my way through them 😂
UPDATE thanks for all the 💕 everyone! Who would have thought my determination to find a humane way to solve my problem would be so popular?
This Simple Habit Resets The Female Hormone and Kickstarts Metabolism For Women Over 30
After hitting rock bottom and struggling with her health for years, Debbie Anderson (with the help from her daughter fitness expert Marissa Anderson) was able to turn her health around in dramatic fashion going from a very unhealthy 53 year old, to an incredibly lean, healthy and energetic 55 year old mother of 3 and soon to be grandmother!
After experiencing such a heart breaking turn of events in her life that lead her down this path to rock bottom, she decided she wanted to share this with other women who she knew must be going through many of the same challenges in life she had faced.
After 6 months of sustained health, she began sharing her program with women in her community who (like her) were struggling to keep up with the daily demands of life, work, family and overall health all while trying to stay ahead of the changes in the female hormones once we're over 30 years of age.
Due to an overwhelming positive reaction from other women in their 30s, 40s, 50s, 60s and even into their 70s and 80s! She was so inspired and decided to share her program called “Over 30 Hormone Solution” with as many women as possible who needed help.

DIY Weed-Be-Gone Spray – Better Alternative That Works Compared To Harsh Chemicals
DIY Weed-Be-Gone Spray – Better Alternative That Works Compared To Harsh Chemicals
Spring is a busy season for home gardeners. It’s the time to start raking matted leaves, edging the beds, removing winter protection wraps, inspecting for plants for damage, fertilizing the trees and plants, pruning flowering shrubs, and of course, pulling the weeds. Once the seeds for produce or flowers have been chosen and planted, the maintenance begins. This involves watering, harvesting, and naturally, fighting those weeds. The weed battle doesn’t really end. Therefore, it’s important to choose your weapon wisely. [1]
Much of the appeal of home-grown produce is that they are hormone and chemical-free, but that could change depending on the weed killer used.
Strong chemical herbicides, fungicides, and pesticides can contribute to water contamination. [2] Commercial weed killers can pollute not only the groundwater but the soil, as well as garden insects, pollinators, and other wildlife around the garden. This can also detrimentally affect pets and children. Other issues may include irritating airways, skin, and eyes. A common ingredient in these herbicides is glyphosate, which is allegedly linked to causing cancer. [3]
Cynthia Curl, an environmental health scientist at Boise State University in Idaho, said, “Many assumptions have been made about the safety of glyphosate that are now being actively questioned. We will see an explosion of information about glyphosate, and it’s about time. We’re really playing catch-up on this one.” [3]
How to Use A Natural Vinegar-Based Weed Killer
Vinegar-based weed killers work by drawing out moisture, and essentially drying weeds out. It can successfully kill weeds including:
Dandelions
Canada thistle
Chickweed
Buckhorn plantain
Quackgrass
Lambsquarters
Crabgrass
Pigweed (amaranth)
Bindweed (perennial morning glory)
One of the ways vinegar works is by lowering the pH of the soil, so keep in mind that it can also harm healthy plants. That’s the main disadvantage of some natural weed killers like this. To avoid destroying desired vegetation and flowers, here are some tips:
Use tarps to hide the wanted plants
Avoid using the natural week killer when it’s rainy or windy outside
Reapplication may be needed for stubborn weed growth
Not all homemade weed killers are the same. You may need to test different versions to get the desired effect. [4]
This DIY weed killer’s ingredients are inexpensive and may already be waiting in your pantry. If not, it’ll cost about three dollars to make, which cheaper than another natural store-bought weed killer. Additionally, this DIY week killer is completely toxin-free and safe to spray around pets and children without worrying about them inhaling harsh chemicals.
DIY All-Natural Weed Killer
Ingredients:
1-gallon white vinegar (5% acetic acid)
¼ cup natural dish soap*
2 cups Epsom salt (regular salt can be substituted)
Directions:
Prepare a gallon-large container and a spray bottle to apply the weed killer.
Pour the salt into the container.
Add the vinegar, and mix it with the salt. Let sit for around an hour to allow the salt to dissolve.
Add the dish soap and mix until all the ingredients are combined and pour the mixture into the spray bottle.
A Note on Dish Soap*
You’ll often find dish soap in DIY weed killers like is this. While the soap its self is not doing the ‘weed-killing’ it is used in the formula as a binder to help the active ingredients stick to their intended targets. The acetic acid and salt work to dry out the leaves, which makes the plant unable to produce food. This is what causes the weeds to die. [5]
Dawn dish soap is one you’ll often see and is originally used in this recipe. However, if you’re looking to use one that is more eco-friendly you can something natural and unscented like ECOS or Seventh Generation. According to the Environmental Working Group (EWG), most DAWN soap products don’t rate that well when it comes to environmental friendliness. [6] For more plant healthy dish soaps, check out the list here.
Additional Tips:
It may take up to 24 hours for the weeds to die completely, and bigger weeds may require more sprays than smaller ones.
Take care not to spray the grass or plants around the weeds since this weed killer will kill them as well.
This DIY Weed Killer is best used on sunny days since the sun helps hasten weed death once sprayed.
You don’t need potentially toxic chemicals to have a weed-free garden. This homemade weed killer is effective and non-expensive. Give it a try!
