DIY Chemical-Free Disinfecting Wipes

DIY Chemical-Free Disinfecting Wipes

Most of the time when we’re wiping down the house we reach for whatever’s convenient. A disinfecting wipe that may be infecting you with something: disease. Compounds found in Clorox wipes can lead to a host of diseases.

Clorox wipes, while being open about ingredients, contain chemicals like hyxoxyethanol, a solvent and grease remover used in industrial cleaning, and Alkyl C12-14 Dimethylethylbenzyl Ammonium Chloride which is added to products as a “cleaning agent”.

These chemicals have been found to cause problems from skin irritation and eye damage to asthma, allergies, and respiratory problems.

Disinfecting Wipe Out

Make your own disinfecting wipes right at home. You’ll know what goes in them so you’ll know what’s really cleaning up your home. With only a few ingredients, all of which you can pronounce easily, these wipes can be made to order.

First, pick out your favorite, cleansing essential oils (EO). Lemon, tea tree, grapefruit, and lavender are all great choices. Each has its own array of antiseptic and antibacterial properties, but lemon and grapefruit are recommended for their awesome smell.

Lemon Smells Clean

Now that you’ve got your favorite EOs assembled, you’re ready to start making your own disinfecting wipes. Get started:

What You Need

An old t-shirt or other soft cloth cut into squares

Glass storage container –  a 1-quart mason jar works well

1/2 cup white vinegar

1/2 cup water

10 – 15 drops essential oils (Lemon, Tea Tree, Thieves, Grapefruit, Lavender are great options)

Steps

– Mix the water, vinegar, and essential oils together in a tub, bucket, or bowl.

– Put your t-shirt squares into your container. You can fold them in nicely or just stuff them in.

– Next, pour your water/ vinegar mixture in the container and make sure the cloths are evenly covered. Give the container a shake to make sure all the cloths are soaked in the mixture.

– Store the jar in a cool, dark place. Make sure it has a lid and is covered.

Won’t Wipe You Out

The best part? These wipes are totally reusable. Just throw them in the wash when you’re done and treat them in the water/ vinegar mixture again. If you’ve got extra solution after you’ve made a batch, you can save it for the next batch.

The other best part? It’s amazingly easy. And because there are so few ingredients, it is low in cost and high in value – you don’t need to be afraid to use these wipes anywhere. The vinegar and essential oils have cleaning properties that are safe and natural.

Wipe On, Wipe Off

Now that you know just how easy it is, you’ll never buy chemical-filled, store-bought disinfecting wipes from the store again. And you’ve got a use for all those old t-shirts! Just make sure to clean them first.

Now all you’ve got to do is work on your perfect mix of essential oils. How do you want your house to smell? It’s up to you. Now enjoy your chemical-free clean home. You deserve it.
