Dog Dies 15 Minutes After His Owner, 25, Loses Heartbreaking Battle With Cancer

Dog Dies 15 Minutes After His Owner, 25, Loses Heartbreaking Battle With Cancer

If you’ve ever had the honor of having a dog, you know that they are incredibly loyal. And animals often have a favorite person, one who they’re always looking for and follow around the house. One Scottish pup, Nero, was so connected to his owner that he passed away just 15 minutes after his owner died from cancer. (1)

Stuart Hutchison, a 25-year-old man from Alloa, Scotland, had been battling brain cancer for eight long years. He and his family turned to both surgery and chemotherapy to fight his brain tumor. Stuart relapsed twice and was never considered in remission. (1, 2)

Stuart began chemotherapy at the end of 2018. He was getting scans every three months to check on his progress. At his scan in March 2019, the doctors told Stuart that the chemotherapy was working. (1)

The Cancer Spreads

But in May, Stuart was on vacation in Spain with his wife, Danielle, when he started noticing pain in his hand. He went in for a checkup, but the doctors didn’t think anything was wrong. But by June 2019, the pain had started to affect Stuart’s entire arm. He learned that the cancer had spread to his bones and pelvis, as well as throughout his brain. (1)

Danielle, 22, and Stuart had been together for about six years. They got engaged in 2017 and had just been married in January 2019. Danielle is a pharmacy assistant. (1)

After receiving the heartbreaking news that Stuart’s cancer had spread, he and Danielle moved in with his parents in Alloa. Stuart’s mother, Fiona Conaghan, who was his full-time caretaker, told The Mirror, “We got Stuart home four weeks ago because he wanted to die at home because that’s where he was born.” (1, 2)

On August 11, Danielle woke up to find that her glasses were broken. Knowing that Stuart didn’t have much time, she didn’t want to leave him. So Danielle’s father offered to go to the young couple’s home to find another pair for her. (1)

Man’s Best Friend

When he got to their home, Danielle’s father noticed that their dog, Nero, wasn’t doing well. He decided to take Nero, a French bulldog, to the emergency vet. (1, 2)

Stuart and Danielle had two other dogs beside two-year-old Nero. They also had Nala and Amelia, who is Nero and Nala’s puppy. (1)

Although Stuart loved all of his dogs, he had a special relationship with Nero. Fiona told The Mirror, “He had three dogs, but him and Nero were like one man and his dog. Nero was the dog which was always with him.” (1)

When Danielle’s father got Nero to the emergency vet, they found that he had a ruptured spine. He passed away shortly after arriving at the animal hospital. (1, 2)

As all of this was happening, Stuart passed away at home. Nero died at the animal hospital just 15 minutes after Stuart’s battle with cancer ended. (1, 2)

“Stuart died about 1:15 p.m. that day, and Nero died roughly 15 minutes later,” Fiona told The Mirror. “Danielle was heartbroken to have lost both of them, but she has been so strong. Stuart was a strong, loveable character, everyone loved him.” (1)
